Sand from the Sahara

Sand from the Sahara

Our two largest mineral collections were assembled in the late 1800s and early 1900s by early North American mineralogists. Many of the specimens they considered “noteworthy” would today be considered commonplace. This vial of sand from the Sahara Desert, for example, was considered worth cataloging in late 1800s North America.
